SOMETIMES LOVE GETS GRITTY

JOHNNY TALKED TO SUE 1995 Recording

100 MPH LIVE AT THE UNION CHAPEL 1995 Recording

SECOND BEST - 1995 Recording

THE EARLY MORNING ROUTINE 1995 Recording

SONNY GOT CAUGHT IN THE NIGHT

SOMETIMES LOVE GETS GRITTY

(EARLIER VERSION - FINISHED VERSION)

Copyright Simon Smith London 14 August 1995

I was lying on the road Looking at my skin I said hey baby Will you come and look in? I was pleading don't you leave me I was begging you don't forsake me I could tell the sight weren't pretty But sometimes love gets gritty I was lying beside you Through a long dark night I was holding your hand oh so tight I was thinking about you leaving About you going away You woke to find me praying begging you to stay Love it's a dark time So love welcome to my dark mind I was walking a long road Trying to find my way I was telling you to go But hoping you would stay I was giving you this shit 'Cause you'd given some to me I was blinding you with words But hoping you'd see through me But sometimes love gets gritty

Johnny Talked To Sue

7.1989 Copyright Simon Smith

Johnny talked to Sue While she'd wait for the forty two He'd make her laugh He'd make her cry He'd make her time fly by Johnny leased a car from motability [disability car leasing charity] And drove it 'round Sue's vicinity And one day stopped and said to Sue "Do you want to get in with me" He'd make her laugh He'd make her cry He'd make her time fly by Johnny and Sue grew closer every day Thought their love would never go away Entwined under the burning sun Their life together had begun He'd make her laugh He'd make her cry He'd make her time fly by Sue's mother would often warn Of the burden Johnny'd be Sue's father said she loved out of sympathy And for Johnny's sake she should leave him And for their sake she did He'd make her laugh He'd make her cry He'd make her time fly by A year went by in silence But the kind that said it all When Sue left home to live She didn't laugh no more

One Hundred Miles An Hour

Copyright Simon Smith London 1994

One hundred miles an hour On a deserted road to Madrid The sun sets the road on fire While a bride in black dances for a lift Angels come to cool my brow With visions of the here and now The silent thoughts that pass us by With electric words that haunt the sky The city greets us like we're old friends While Jesus, his arms outstretched, Tells us to come again And the US jets circle overhead If you forgive they won't forget In this land of grace We came and went without a trace August 1989 We drove fast to the borderline I could feel the Angels flying Backwards against time At one hundred miles an hour On a deserted road to Madrid An Angel passed in reverse Revealing the size of the universe

Second Best
14.3.1990 Simon Smith

Sometimes you're going, going away I call from my bed, but you won't stay When I wake up it's the middle of the day Sometimes my life just goes that way. Somedays we're friends others we're not Somedays I have what you'd call a lot Somedays I haven't what others have got Some days I have what I wish I had not Some live for money some for love Some like to push some like to shove Some like to live some want to die Some sit still while others try to fly Mud on your hands and blood in your eye You kissed my heart with the sweetest lie Pulled the sheets over my head Closed the door and left me for dead. Sometimes we've been running running for so long That we exchange our lives for a pocket full of songs Sometimes we put on our bulletproof vests And exchange a life of loving for a love that's second best.

The Early Morning Routine

The Early Morning Routine The early morning routine I lie in bed while you make tea I ask if there's any post You want to know if I feel guilty. The early morning routine You close the door Say goodbye to me You call out five times And I call out three   The early morning routine I wave from the window You wave from the road As you cycle off below. The early morning routine A goodbye kiss, a "will you miss?" A clear idea of where we went wrong The uncertainty of just how long. The early morning routine Grows longer every day. 20.3.1990 copyright Simon Smith.

Sonny Got Caught In The Night

I was calling you

Out on a summer lawn

Didn't we shine then

Now those days have gone

I was picturing your love inside

I was picturing our love for life

Sonny got caught in the night

Like a wanted man

Found out the hard way

That if you don't understand

You'll be misunderstood

And the light

Keeps on shining

And the love keeps

On hurting

I will be

I will be near you

But my heart

Is over you

But my heart is over you

I'll be crying

I'll be crying for you

At night the streets are full of people

Looking for dreams that won't come in sleep

Sometimes I get on my bike

And ride through these dreams

Like a prop in a scene

Take roads where

Emptiness runs free

Where emptiness runs free

I was struck by lightening

A fire is burning

The sky is

Crying

I was travelling to you

But my heart ain't over you

I was crying

I'll be crying for you

But my heart ain't over you

I will be running

I will be running to you
